Victoria Arnstein is a New York stand-up comedian, sketch comedy writer and performer. She grew up in a close-knit Middle Eastern Jewish community, where her grandparents were Lebanese Jews, and was a theatre kid and a singer long before she told a joke on stage. She is the first woman from her community to become a stand-up comedian.
She wanted to do it from the moment she saw Wendy Liebman on an HBO special, but waited, worried that no mother-in-law would want a comedian for a daughter-in-law. About ten years into her marriage, after three children, her husband suggested it out of nowhere. Her first set, in 2011, was in front of about 250 people at Gotham Comedy Club, and Jim Gaffigan told her afterwards that she was a natural.
She has since produced her own shows in Hawaii and at the Broadway Comedy Club in New York, where she ran four open mics and built lineups with names such as Mark Normand. She makes sketches for more than 100,000 followers on Instagram, runs ultramarathons, and wrote the memoir Impress Yourself, which counts laughter as one of eight pillars of health.
