The India chapter of Hop For Pop began with a simple but ambitious dream—to revive the charm of sketch comedy and the format of visual interviews that once shaped popular humour. At its heart, the initiative aimed to remind people of the journey that comedy has taken over the decades, highlighting how it has grown from simple slapstick and sketches to the sharp, observational standup of today. By doing so, we hoped to give our audiences a sense of continuity: to show them where comedy came from, where it currently stands, and where it might be headed in the years to come.

However, as we grew and interacted with the community, we realised that comedy in India faces challenges beyond just content or awareness. Many aspiring comedians, full of fresh perspectives and sharp wit, remain unseen because they lack the means to put themselves out there. Some do not have the resources to invest in promotion or stage time, while others struggle to navigate the ever-demanding world of social media. These barriers keep them from connecting with the audiences they deserve. Recognising this, we are now reimagining our role—not only as curators of comedy’s past and present but also as enablers of its future, by building a platform where these voices can finally be heard.

And gradually, we would be doing the same with film making, novel writing and maybe music too.
