Biography

233 words — lift as-is, no rewriting required

Jason Salmon is a stand-up comedian and actor who arrived at comedy backwards. He moved to New York for an engineering job with no intention of working in entertainment, took acting classes because he thought it would be a good way to meet women, and then found he liked the acting. Sketch came next, then improv, and stand-up came last — which is why, as he puts it, he never had stage fright. “I was comfortable on stage. I just wasn’t funny on stage. So I had to learn to be funny.”

The acting has kept pace with the comedy. He voiced Mark Johnson in Red Dead Redemption, recording without being told which character he was reading, and played an Upper East Side gay man in the 1980s in an off-off-Broadway production of Richard Greenberg’s Eastern Standard — a role that required him to learn modern art and how to smoke, and which produced the compliment he still rates above all others.

On stage he is a writer’s comic: elaborate setups that hide three jokes inside them, punchlines that run several beats long, and a command of pause that comes directly from the acting. He is unusually articulate about the craft — on why he trusts criticism more than praise, on the five rules for joking about a sensitive topic, and on why a set that merely goes well has taught him nothing. His album Force of Nurture reached number one.

The part other press kits leave out

What you should know before you book him

Jason Salmon thinks about a comedy set the way a musician thinks about a piece — timing, silence, and the deliberate risk taken in front of a live room. His method is unusually explicit, and it explains what a booker actually gets.

Silence is the build, not the failure

The years it took him to stop fearing a quiet room produced the central insight of his act: silence is often not the absence of laughter but the run-up to it. He allies with it rather than filling it.

He will deliberately overrun a joke

On a hot crowd he pushes a bit past the laugh to find its endpoint. It is calculated, not reckless — on a difficult room he does the opposite and plays safe.

Criticism over praise

“Nobody criticises you unless they really don’t think you did well.” He treats compliments as socially motivated and notes as data. Useful in a producer or a director.

Sensitive topics have rules

Five of them, and three are versions of be funnier. The core one: the sensitive topic is the setup and the humanity is the punchline — never the reverse.

The setup is where the jokes hide

His punchline might be three jokes long, and what looks like a long runway is doing real work. It reads as intelligence; he says it is mostly curiosity.

Notebook first, keyboard last

Material starts handwritten and exploratory, ends typed and polished. The riffs that land on stage are often seeded by writing he did days earlier.
