Biography

241 words — lift as-is, no rewriting required

Krystyna Hutchinson is a stand-up comedian and the co-host, with Corinne Fisher, of Guys We F****d — twelve years of asking strangers about their sex lives and their worst decisions, and a creative partnership that is now fifteen years old. She was a theatre kid who got her first taste of making a full house laugh as the lead in a one-act comedy in her final year of high school, and she has been hooked since.

Her plan was Saturday Night Live; she worshipped Gilda Radner. After three failed interviews she landed an internship with the show’s production department in her last year of college — the Betty White season — and at the finale afterparty, a few whiskey sours in, she asked Jon Lutz what she had to do to get on the show. To her surprise and horror, he said: do stand-up.

She has since played clubs, colleges, bars, basements, laundromats and sushi restaurants, including plenty of rooms that did not care whether she lived or died. Her act is autobiographical, drawn from what she calls an endless well of insane life experience, and her one rule is never to make the victim of abuse the butt of the joke. Her debut solo show, Congrats On Not Killing Yourself!, turns the most traumatic parts of her life into laughter, and premiered at the Fringe.

The part other press kits leave out

What you should know before you book her

Krystyna Hutchinson has spent twelve years in frank conversation about sex and damage, and it has made her fearless on stage without making her careless. She is also candid about what the job does to a sensitive person.

Nothing is off limits, with one exception

She has never pulled a joke for making her more uneasy than the crowd. The one line she will not cross: the victim of abuse is never the punchline.

Autobiographical, and the well is deep

Her act comes from her own life, which she describes as never boring. Jokes start as something she said to a friend and realised was a bit.

Pen and paper, then room to riff

She writes half a joke longhand — typing does not work for her — and leaves the rest to find on stage. A beat of breathing room between two lines can be the whole fix.

Tested in the worst rooms

Laundromats, sushi restaurants, crowds who wanted her to shut up. It is where a sensitive performer learned she would not die if the room hated her.

A fifteen-year partnership

She and Corinne Fisher are yin and yang: different skill sets, different personalities, an iron-clad trust on stage. Their live interactive shows are her favourite work.

Relentlessly optimistic

Her signature line is that her glass of whiskey is always half full. Life has thrown her curve balls; the hope has stayed intact.
