Biography

241 words — lift as-is, no rewriting required

Larry Charles is a writer and director whose work has spent forty years dismantling the rules of the form it belongs to. He wrote some of the strangest and darkest episodes of Seinfeld, directed Curb Your Enthusiasm, and made Borat, Brüno, The Dictator, Religulous and Masked and Anonymous. On the Curb crew they called him LC — Line Crossing — and he is fairly sure it was not meant as a compliment.

He came to comedy sideways. A college and film-school dropout who describes himself in those years as a street person, he had none of the standard credentials of a television writer — no Harvard humour magazine, no staff-job ladder. He tried stand-up and hated it, throwing up before shows, and concluded that he did not have what Pryor and Carlin and Robin Williams had, so he sold his jokes to other people instead. What he did have was a range of interests — music, difficult films, the Firesign Theatre, Andy Kaufman’s anti-comedy — that no one else in the room shared, and much of it went into Kramer.

His later work took him somewhere few comedy directors go. For Larry Charles’ Dangerous World of Comedy he sought out comedians in Somalia, Liberia, Iraq and Nigeria, and interviewed the warlord General Butt Naked on an unlit street the night he landed. His memoir is Comedy Samurai.

The part other press kits leave out

What you should know about how he works

Larry Charles is not a technician who happens to be funny, and he is emphatic that what he does cannot be taught. Across an hour he keeps circling the same conviction: comedy is a mystery, the rules exist to be crossed, and nobody in it should ever be let off the hook.

There is no logic to it

“There is no right or wrong when it comes to comedy. There’s only the laughter.” He is openly sceptical of anyone selling a method, including the many who have tried to teach one.

It gets harder, not easier

The instinct forms in childhood and becomes unconscious — but experience is a burden. The more you have seen, the more you know has already been done, and the harder originality gets.

Nobody let off the hook

His objection to most comedy is the redemption arc. The great comic characters end where they started. On Seinfeld it became doctrine: no hugging, no learning.

The line is there to be crossed

Literally, in film grammar, and everywhere else. His defence is that Godard and Coppola crossed it too, and that an audience immersed in something does not care about the rules being broken.

Character is built from the inside

Why Borat worked and Aladeen did not: years of immersion versus a couple of months. He knew what underwear Borat wore. That is the difference between inhabiting a character and wearing one.

Danger is easier than a microphone

He is calm in genuine peril and terrified of public speaking — he prayed to lose the Emmy so he would not have to make a speech. Worth knowing before you put him on a stage.
