Good Night Comedy
Almaty has a comedy scene running in three languages, and almost nobody outside Kazakhstan knows it exists. Good Night Comedy is the English half of it: Dosmukhamed Ali and Alisher Toregali, a double act built on crowd work, running the nights that visitors can actually follow.

Good Night Comedy is an English-language stand-up outfit in Almaty, Kazakhstan, founded in 2023 and run by two comedians: Dosmukhamed Ali and Alisher Toregali. Between them they perform in Kazakh, Russian and English, and the shows they programme are the part of the city’s comedy scene that a visitor can walk into and follow. Their argument is that comedy is native to the culture rather than imported into it — a nomadic people could not carry libraries, so they carried songs, stories and jokes instead.
Dosmukhamed Ali leads the room. He started in KVN at school in 2011, moved to stand-up in 2014, left for a corporate career in 2017 and came back seriously in 2022. The turn came at an open mic at the Laugh Factory in Chicago, where he discovered that being Kazakh — a Muslim name, an Asian face and a Russian accent — was the most interesting thing in a twenty-comic lineup. He bombed in Miami, packed a room in North Carolina, and worked out that comedy could be exported from Kazakhstan. He also organises the English programme of the city’s annual comedy festival and has opened on tour for Victor Patrascan.
Alisher is the counterweight and the craftsman. He came up through university KVN and started stand-up during the 2020 lockdown because he needed the money, then spent six years in Russian-language comedy without once doing crowd work — until he worked out that views are what turn stand-up into a living. He studies technique the way an engineer studies a machine, and takes his standard for material from a professor: shout your point out of a window, and if nobody stops to argue, do not say it on stage either.

What you should know before you book them
Good Night Comedy is a working double act and a production outfit in the same two people. They headline their own nights, host, run crowd work shows and programme other comics, in a city most bookers have never had a contact in.
A genuine double act
Dosmukhamed leads and carries the energy; Alisher sits back, which by his own account is what gives him time to think of the next joke. They can be booked as a pair or separately.
Crowd work is the house style
Both work off the room. Dosmukhamed’s method is simply to bring his offstage self on stage intact; Alisher came to it late and deliberately, once it was clear that crowd work is what gets seen.
Built for rooms that are not local
The whole premise is English-language comedy for an audience of Kazakhs, expats, tourists and new arrivals. Nothing in the act assumes the crowd shares a first language or a passport.
They programme as well as perform
Their own nights, plus the English-language part of Almaty’s annual comedy festival, now in its fifth edition. For a promoter, they are a line into the entire Central Asian scene.
A different set of limits
They are direct about working under real legal risk: they say four Kazakh comedians have been jailed over jokes, and that the state treats Instagram as a public space where cursing is not allowed. Performing in English is part of what keeps them out of trouble.
Three languages, soon four
The scene runs in Kazakh, Russian and English, and Alisher was adding Turkish at the time of the interview. He rates English as the best-structured language for comedy and Kazakh as the one with the most flavour.
