Biography
241 words — lift as-is, no rewriting required
Stacy Price is a Los Angeles actor and character comedian with around fifteen years of work behind her. She trained in New York at Circle in the Square, doing a great deal of theatre, then moved west to the Groundlings and is now a member of the Actors’ Gang, Tim Robbins’s company. She works almost entirely in character — by her own account she can barely improvise as herself, but give her a character and she is free.
Her union card came from HBO’s The Deuce, by a route she tells well. After weeks performing an outdoor show in 101-degree heat, working a survival job in a booth at the US Open and hearing nothing from her manager in six months, an audition arrived for the next morning. She got home at midnight, rehearsed with a director friend who assured her they would never cast her, walked in with nothing to lose — and got the role.
Her one-woman show, Citizen Other Place, draws on her own experience of cancer treatment in the American healthcare system. She plays five characters; the audience is checked into a hospital on the way in; and the antagonist is Mike, a medical debt collector personified as one man who keeps phoning, like the villain in Die Hard. The title comes from Susan Sontag’s idea that we all hold two passports — one for the kingdom of the well, one for the kingdom of the sick.
The part other press kits leave out
What you should know before you book her
Stacy Price is an actor first, and her show is built with an actor’s tools — character, stakes and an antagonist — applied to a subject most comedy avoids entirely.
Immersive and interactive
The audience is checked in as hospital patients, prompted to throw fruit at a mystery character, and recruited to help a patient get treatment. The room is part of the machinery.
Five characters, all of them her
Her view is that everyone you meet contains parts of yourself, so the characters do not feel like costumes. The hardest to play was the one closest to her own experience.
Comedy is how she handles hard things
She argues it is the only form that lets people with different views actually talk to each other about something difficult. The show is built on that conviction.
An action-movie structure
The debt collector calls the hero with threats, like a villain phoning in a bomb. Borrowing the genre gives a medical story urgency, pace and a target to root against.
She is precise about what a show is for
“What are you trying to say?” is her first question of any piece. Getting a laugh is not the goal; making the audience leave carrying something is.
Workshopped properly
Three workshops — one in New York, two in Los Angeles — with the show reworked after each. It arrives tested, not premiered.

Quotable
01
“It’s one thing to say you are something. It’s another thing to do something, go home and say: that could have been better.”02
“It’s great to get a laugh — but how can we make that laugh feel bigger?”03
“What are you trying to say? Why are you doing this? What’s your purpose?”04
“The way I talk about hard things is comedy. That’s the only way I think you can talk about it.”05
“For people to really have discourse and communicate different opinions to each other, I think the only way is comedy.”06
“My friend was like: they’re not going to cast you as this. And that allowed me the freedom of just being like — you’re not going to pick me, so let me just do it.”07
“My manager called me after the audition. He’s like: what did you do in there? And I was like, I just did the stuff.”08
“When I thought about it, I was like — they’re all parts of me. Everybody that you meet has aspects of yourself.”09
“I’m even having trouble improvising as: hi, I’m Stacy Price. But if you let me be a character, then I am improvising.”10
“The character that’s closest to me — that’s the one that required the most work.”11
“There’s this motif in action movies where the villain is calling the hero. We’re putting it with somebody trying to save themselves from a very serious medical ailment.”12
“The reason they’re going to die is because they didn’t pay enough money.”13
“The numbers are all over the place. That’s a big joke of the show.”14
“They said: we’d like you to pay a thousand dollars now. And I was like, why — in case I die?”15
“That is the darkest thing, but I think it’s also really funny.”16
“We all have two passports — for the kingdom of the well and the kingdom of the sick — and at some point in everyone’s life, we have to use the passport of the sick.”17
“This feeling that when you get sick you’re different, or other, or alone, is completely false.”
