Biography

231 words — lift as-is, no rewriting required

Byron Bertram is a Vancouver comedian, character comic, actor and street performer with more than twenty years on stage. He learned to juggle as a teenager at a summer school for the performing arts, fell for outdoor street theatre in Vancouver, and built a show around juggling and escaping from a straitjacket that funded years of travel — and, quietly, a parallel stand-up career, since he was already in England, Australia and across the States and Canada when the open mics came up.

In the last couple of years his work has found a much larger audience through Sergey Potensky, a character billed as Russia’s only living comedian: a fresh-off-the-boat immigrant in a tracksuit and gold chains who escaped the war and turns Western life over in his hands. The character was inspired by an ex-girlfriend’s bluntness, and it has been shared by Bill Burr and featured on Tom Segura’s Your Mom’s House. Slavic audiences in particular have taken to it.

He is also a screen actor, with credits including Supernatural and Once Upon a Time, and is candid that the hardest transition of his career was not learning to write jokes but giving up the props — standing on a stage with nothing to hide behind. He calls it being naked. His current interest is pushing the character further into long-form narrative.

The part other press kits leave out

What you should know before you book him

Byron Bertram is two acts in one body, and the more interesting story is the relationship between them — a strong physical performer who deliberately gave up his safety net, and a comic who solved a branding problem by inventing someone else.

Two bookable shows

Byron as himself, and Sergey Potensky. Also a full street-theatre set with juggling and a straitjacket escape. Different rooms, different acts — ask for the one you want.

A performer before he was a comic

Stage presence, crowd handling and likeability were already built by the time he started writing jokes. He compares it to an acrobat becoming a breakdancer.

He gave up the props on purpose

His first set ended with juggling and other comics told him he did not need it. Losing the safety blanket is what forced the personal material.

The character is a branding solution

He is disarmingly honest that as himself he is “just another white guy doing comedy”, and that Sergey is what makes an audience remember a name.

Voices and accents, not slapstick

Despite the circus background, the physicality in his stand-up is vocal. The act is action-heavy rather than one-liner-driven — short jokes, somewhere between a bit and a story.

He will not dumb down for a headliner

Asked about headliners who tell openers to hold back, he is blunt: it is a sign of insecurity, not stagecraft.
