Biography

244 words — lift as-is, no rewriting required

Diogo Portugal is a Brazilian stand-up, festival director and club owner from Curitiba — the surname was his great-grandfather’s, and it has meant a career of explaining that Portugal is a country but he is from Brazil. He began by accident: a friend throwing a going-away party to raise money asked him to do a few minutes. He said he was not a comedian. He did it anyway.

The room was polite rather than delighted until he lifted the microphone off the stand — and he still remembers the moment precisely, because that is when he got looser, started moving, and the laughs arrived. There were no comedy clubs in Brazil then. Comics went on when the jazz band took a break, to audiences who had come for something else entirely. Around twenty years ago he dropped the wigs and the characters for pure stand-up, walking on with a clean face as himself, which at the time meant explaining to people what stand-up comedy was.

He now owns a comedy house in Curitiba and runs Risorama, a national festival built on a deliberate formula: pair the biggest names in Brazil with newcomers nobody has heard of. He is very good on why the unknowns so often win the night. He is currently touring Impróprio Para Políticos — not appropriate for politicians — timed for the election, and has faced legal action over jokes himself.

The part other press kits leave out

What you should know before you book him

Diogo Portugal has been a comedian for longer than Brazil has had a comedy circuit, and much of what he says comes from having built the thing he now works inside. He is also one of the clearest voices on what happens when a joke meets a court.

He built the room he plays

He came up performing in venues where nobody had come to see comedy, owns a comedy house in Curitiba, and runs a national festival. He understands a bill from the promoter’s side as well as the stage.

Characters first, then a clean face

Two decades of impressions and characters before he stripped it all away. The switch to being himself on stage he describes as the biggest challenge of his career.

A joke is not an opinion

His central position, and he has tested it. When his friend Leo Lins was acquitted after facing roughly two million reais in penalties over jokes, Diogo immediately booked him for the festival — and took the press for it.

Newcomers should not start there

He is emphatic that young comics copying the most transgressive acts are walking into a trap. The experienced ones have been booed, have survived it, and have built up to it.

There is no rehearsal

A joke only exists once it is tried in front of people. He treats the stage as the only laboratory and is unromantic about how much it hurts.

The unknowns often win

The insight behind his festival’s formula: audiences come for the famous names and expect nothing from the newcomers, which is exactly why the newcomers land.
