Biography

259 words — lift as-is, no rewriting required

Dosmukhamed Ali is a stand-up comedian and producer based in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and one of the few people anywhere performing regularly in Kazakh, Russian and English. He started in KVN, the Soviet-era team comedy format, in his last year of school in 2011, moved to stand-up in 2014, then left it in 2017 for a corporate career in finance and technology. He came back to comedy seriously in 2022 and has not stopped since.

The turn came in the autumn of 2021, when a master’s programme took him to the United States and he signed up for an open mic at the Laugh Factory in Chicago. He found that being Kazakh — a Muslim name, an Asian face and a Russian accent — was the most interesting thing in a twenty-comic lineup. He bombed in Miami, played to a packed room in North Carolina, and worked out that comedy could be exported from Kazakhstan. He came home to a country that had just been through the January 2022 uprising, with censorship loosened and a wave of new arrivals from Russia filling the rooms overnight. He started English-language stand-up that summer and co-founded Good Night Comedy in 2023.

He argues that comedy is native to the culture rather than imported into it: a nomadic people could not carry libraries, so they carried songs, stories and jokes instead. Alongside his own hours he runs the English programme of the city’s annual comedy festival, now in its fifth edition, and has toured as the opening act for the Romanian comedian Victor Patrascan.

The part other press kits leave out

What you should know before you book him

Dosmukhamed Ali is a high-energy club comic, an experienced crowd worker and the organiser behind most English-language comedy in Almaty. He is also used to playing rooms where nobody shares his first language.

Three languages, working on a fourth

He performs in Kazakh, Russian and English, and was adding Turkish at the time of the interview. He rates English as the best-structured language for comedy and Kazakh as the one with the most flavour in it.

Crowd work is his default gear

His stated method is simply to bring his offstage self on stage intact: feel present, feel relaxed, and the rest follows. He leads the room while his stage partner works the angles behind him.

Tested on foreign rooms

US open mics in Chicago, Miami and North Carolina taught him which of his material travels. He builds sets on the assumption that a good part of the audience is not local.

He can carry 40 minutes alone

Before the double act he regularly did 40-minute solo stretches, mixing crowd work with material and sometimes taking a room somewhere darker and more personal. He counts those as his best shows.

He produces as well as performs

Good Night Comedy’s English nights and the English part of Almaty’s comedy festival are both his. If you are programming in Central Asia, he is a line into the whole scene.

A different set of limits

He is direct about working under real legal risk: he says four Kazakh comedians have been jailed over jokes, and that the state treats Instagram as a public space where cursing is not allowed. He performs accordingly, mostly in English.

  • 05

  • 07

“If I’m feeling present, the rest will come.”
  • 08

“Comedy comes pretty naturally to our culture, because we’re basically a nomadic culture.”
  • 09

  • 21

“We are one of the few places where we can still go wild without being afraid of being cancelled. But we are still afraid of being in jail.”
